Kindle Wi-Fi Review

Share

Kindle Wi-FiThe cheapest Kindle available for the Australian market offers the exact same features as the other two models – Kindle Wi-Fi+3G and DX – with one notable exception: it does not include the 3G internet capability.

With the other two Kindle devices Amazon include, and pay for, your internet connection to the Amazon Store (and the internet via the included ‘experimental’ browser). The Wi-Fi only model relies on your home Wi-Fi to connect to the Amazon Store (and internet) to allow you to purchase and download books (you can also use the free Wi-Fi services offered by some retail outlets, such as McDonalds or the subscription Wi-Fi services offered by most hotels. Also, if you have an iPhone 4 you can set up a Wi-Fi hotspot through your phone – all these options will allow you to browse and purchase books from Amazon).

Depending upon the amount of travel you do the exclusion of the free 3G service within the cheapest Kindle may not be suitable. If so, then you should consider the Wi-Fi+3G model that retails for just an additional $50.

If you are an infrequent traveller, have access to Wi-Fi both at home and when outside and want to save a bit of money then the basic Kindle without the 3G service will more than meet your needs. Just be sure that you have Wi-Fi connectivity at home, or have ready access to one near to where you live. Without internet connectivity the Kindle is severely limited in its ability to download new books!
